Questions people ask
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
A new HMRC system for sole traders and landlords: you keep digital records, send a summary of income and expenses every three months, and file your tax return through HMRC-recognised software.
When does it apply to me?
From 6 April 2026 if your qualifying income was over £50,000 in 2024 to 2025, from 6 April 2027 if it is over £30,000 in 2025 to 2026, and from 6 April 2028 if it is over £20,000 in 2026 to 2027.
Can I keep using my spreadsheet?
Yes, with bridging software that reads your spreadsheet and sends the figures to HMRC.
What happens if I send an update late?
Late updates earn penalty points; at 4 points you get a £200 penalty. HMRC will not apply points for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year.
Do I need an accountant?
No. Many people do it themselves with the right software. If you have an accountant, they can send updates for you with agent software.
